Current State of Cannabis: New Brunswick Cannabis Laws
Posted by BK on 16th Jan 2018
New Brunswick recently announced its approach to implementing Canada’s upcoming Cannabis Act in July 2018. While New Brunswick will not limit how much cannabis someone can store at home, it will restrict usage to private residential use only.
Adults ages 19 or older may carry up to 30 grams of dried cannabis when out in public but may not consume it in public. A recent amendment to the Motor Vehicle Act strengthens existing driving impairment laws, adding a three-step test for drivers suspected of cannabis impairment and zero tolerance for cannabis impairment in new drivers and those under 21.
New Brunswick’s working group examined lessons learned from Colorado and Washington when drawing up its cannabis approach, opting for a Crown corporation model to provide the highest level of control, security, access, and awareness over cannabis consumption in the province.
